More on jumping into the bear cage
Last week I posted an article about a man who jumped into a bear enclosure in Berne. This article has a picture of the man in the bear cage getting attacked by the bear. That bear is HUGE and DEADLY.
As Papa Bear in the Berenstain Bears would say, "Let this be a lesson to you."

Bear commercial
This commercial is not as nice as the Coca Cola ads. It features polar bears falling from the sky. The message is that 400kg (the weight of an adult polar bear) of emissions are released per passenger on an average European flight. Conference calls, people! Do it when you can! Prevent polar bears from being emitted from turbines and falling from the sky!

Jumping into a bear cage
Not smart.
It is nice that these bears have a cave, river, and hills though. And that no one is strapping ice skates to their paws.

Sounds like bear army to me
A man in Alaska had to kill four bears that were trying to get into his house within a 24 hour period. Was his house full of berries and honey?
Big Bear
A big bear is being a nuisance in Nevada. The big bear is over 700lbs! Two gunshot wounds haven't stopped him!

11 year olds with guns
An 11 year old in Idaho shot a bear that wouldn't leave his family's porch.
11 year olds probably shouldn't have guns. But, I guess, if the bear wouldn't leave his family alone, someone had to man up. The police said that this bear was causing problems before too.

Bears vs. Petroleum Development in Alaska
Sarah Palin's replacement is concerned that the US is protecting polar bears because he fears that it may be getting in the way of oil development. I am glad that Canada is at least surveying its polar bear population to see current hunting/development is sustainable. The US should follow suit.

Pretty Boring Bear News
A bear wandered into a La Crescenta neighbourhood (near L.A.) and was tranquilized before being released in the wild. I know that this is pretty mediocre bear news, but the reason that the bear was wandering in the urban environment is because his habitat was destroyed by wildfires.

Man gets attacked, takes it in stride
This is the bear news everyone has been waiting for! Bear attack on Vancouver Island!
A man was walking from his home to his car and was swatted on the head by a black bear in the tree above him. He went flying 10 feet! The bear was eating apples from his apple tree! CUTE and dangerous.

Polar bear hunting
When is it okay?
Basically, each community gets a set number of tags per year. If they have to kill one, it comes out of the tags and the community shares the bear. If the tags get used up but there is an emergency and someone has to kill, it gets taken out of next year's tag. If it is a baby bear, it is only worth half a tag.

Breaking News: Two Sources
A young Nunavut man was rescued from an iceflow today where he had been trapped. Right now there are different reports on the involvement of a polar bear and its cubs. It seems that there was a body of a polar bear nearby. BBC reports that the young man shot the polar bear and that there were also twin cubs nearby, while CBC hasn't reported this yet:

Bear crosses the road
The Olympic flame convoy was interrupted when a polar bear crossed the road.
My favorite quot from the article: "When you take your kids to school it's the last thing you tell them - look out for bears."
I want to go to Churchill!

Why Spirit Bears Survive
Spirit bears are a race of black bears that have white fur. The recessive white fur gene has survived in the population because the white bears are more efficient at catching fish.
Bald Bears
Bears in a Leipzig zoo are going bald. They think it is because the zoo is in the wrong climate. So sad!

Bear Army?
A bear discovered a Kashmeri militant hideout in its cave, killed two of the militants and injured two more. The militants had AK-46s and ammo in the cave, but that was no match for the bear!

Hide your children!
The bears are coming to Arviat, Nunavut! Last year, the town filled with an unusually high number of bears during the bear migration, and they are expecting somewhere similar.
This article also gives a bit of insight into bear hunting quotas. In this town, bear hunting is only permitted for "emergency kills" and tags are issued for those kills. I wonder what happens in an "emergency" when they have run out of tags?

Bear Protection
So Canada and Greenland have signed an agreement to form a committee to protect the polar bears in the shared hunting zones in the arctic. I wonder if this includes somehow stopping global warming from destroying the bear's habitat?
This isn't the most exciting bear news, I know. Just bear with me, people!

Prizzly Bear
Finally, the answer to the question we've all been asking: What do you get when you cross a polar bear and a grizzly bear? Answer: the Prizzly.

Polar bear hunting agreement
Canada, Greenland, and Nunavut want to come to an agreement about what the appropriate number of polar bears to hunt is.
There seems to be a dispute between local hunters and scientists about the exact number of bears in the region.
I'll follow up when an agreement is reached.

Halloween in Hudson Bay
Halloween is a little different in Hudson Bay, Manitoba. Trick or treaters have to worry about polar bear attacks while trick or treating. What's that? You don't believe me? Find out here.
Because the bears are restless this late in the season, they are predatory and dangerous. The town fortifies itself on Halloween to ensure that the kids will be safe. All of the entrances of the town are guarded by men with shot guns. Awesome.

The Man Who Bathes With Bears
I recently read about this man in Explore magazine. They featured a picture of him bathing with bears in a bear hot tub.
Lynn (yes, Lynn, as in Jeff Lynn Goldbloom) Rogers is Bear Man.
Bear Man facts:
-he has never been attacked by a bear
-bears hum when they are happy
-there have only been three fatalities caused by black bears in the Eastern US in the past 100 years
Lynn Rodgers, you are my hero!

Interesting...how endangered are polar bears? Does the population need to be "managed" by hunters? Are we going to end up with another Paul McCartney seal hunt battle again?
Polar bears are pretty frickin cute. Have you seen them on Planet Earth?
